With The Trees

The trees used in Lithuanian Pirtis are not interchangeable.

Each one behaves differently in heat. Each one carries a different relationship with the body — with circulation, the nervous system, the breath, the skin. Each one has its own place in the ritual, its own timing, its own way of working.

This series moves through seven trees central to Lithuanian Pirtis tradition. Each session opens with a verbal healing charm from the Lithuanian folk archive — spoken in Lithuanian first, because some things need to be heard in the original before you know what they mean. We move through the botany, the folklore, the medicinal properties, the practical application — how to gather, how to prepare, how to bring this tree into a session.
