There is a Lithuanian concept — esmė and forma. Essence and form.
A tradition can keep its form long after the essence has left. People still go to the sauna. They still whisk with birch. They still light the midsummer fire. But the understanding underneath — which tree, why that tree, what it was always for — quietly disappears.
This series goes back underneath.

The trees used in Lithuanian pirtis are not interchangeable.
Each one behaves differently in heat. Each one carries a different relationship with the body — with circulation, the nervous system, the breath, the skin. Each one has its own place in the ritual, its own timing, its own way of working.
This series moves through seven trees central to Lithuanian pirtis tradition. Each session opens with a healing charm from the Lithuanian folk archive — spoken in Lithuanian first, because some things need to be heard in the original before you know what they mean.
